Behind the Phlavor: OG Recipe

In the beginning there was potential

OG Recipe – The bar that started it all. My wife Jessie is a schoolteacher and was about to take her class on a weekend trip. One of the mom’s gave her a recipe that her kids loved to eat and said they give them energy to hike for hours. They were so good! I was fed up with second class trail snacks, so I started making them for mountain bike rides while my weekly running mileage was on the rise too.

Batch after batch I was making adjustments. There is shredded coconut, why do I need coconut oil? Plus, the oil liquifies at about 75 degrees, which makes for greasy fingers. Protein powder is expensive, nix that. Jessie wanted some crunch and suggested rice puffs. Add this, remove that, test with friends, do it all over again.

Everyone I gave them to was stoked. I’ve never experimented in the kitchen like this, so it made me extremely happy to see their reactions. One night over dinner with friends, I posed the question, “Why couldn’t I turn this hobby into a business?” They laughed. When they stopped and saw I was serious, the first question was “OK, what do you name it?” My daughter was 7 at the time chimed in with “Fun Bar!” We stopped, turned our heads, my eyes widened, and instantly knew this was going to happen.
